Transforming Haiti into a self-sustaining community…one village at a time.

Our Story

The delivery of education and meeting basic needs are the beginning of hope realized.  Hope for a greater future allows children to learn and focus on a brighter tomorrow, not be consumed by the struggle of surviving.

Haiti Empowered offers this hope to children through programs designed to prepare them for new opportunities. They receive education, healthcare for their families and positive affirmations building their self esteem. Each lesson unfolds a world they could imagine.

Sponsorship provides assurance and connections, with people cheering on their success.  During their time in school, kids form close friendships from a common experience. Those bonds carry on through graduation, impacting their community.

As the children progress, they discover hidden talents and passions. Watching other student succeed, they to dream of a future, once thought unattainable.

Their peers master trades, secure internships and ascend to important roles.  This is an encouragement to the younger students. Those roles are becoming more available in the community and with Haiti Empowered.

Generational change occurs as they become leaders in their community and begin to start their own families

Transforming Haiti from the inside out

Challenges
in Haiti

  • Only half of school-aged children in Haiti attend school to some degree. Lack of schools, high tuition rates and socio-economic constraints severely limit school enrollment. Well over 80% of schools in Haiti rely external help to cover costs the parents can’t afford.

Moreover, a lack of hope among children negatively impacts their education. When children lose hope, they question the purpose of going to school. As a result, over 40% of kids end up dropping out before reaching the 5th grade. This alarming dropout rate contributes to a low graduation rate, leaving many essentially illiterate.

  • Haiti's infrastructure is in a state of disrepair. As the poorest country in the western hemisphere, it lacks the resources to invest in public transportation or maintain its already crumbling infrastructure, especially after the devastating earthquake of 2010.

The poor infrastructure in Haiti leads to several significant challenges and negative impacts on the country and its people:

    1. Limited Access to Basic Services: Inadequate roads, transportation systems, and utilities hinder the delivery of basic services such as healthcare, education, and clean water to remote areas, affecting the quality of life for many Haitians.

    2. Economic Constraints: Poor infrastructure can hinder economic growth and development. It makes it difficult to transport goods and access markets, limiting trade opportunities and foreign investments.

    3. Inefficient Transportation: Lack of proper transportation systems makes commuting difficult and time-consuming, limiting people's mobility and access to job opportunities.

    4. Increased Vulnerability to Natural Disasters: Crumbling infrastructure is less resilient to natural disasters, leaving communities more vulnerable to the impact of hurricanes, floods, and earthquakes.

    5. Health and Sanitation Issues: Inadequate sanitation facilities and unreliable water supply contribute to health problems, including the spread of waterborne diseases.

    6. Educational Challenges: Poor infrastructure affects the quality of education as it may limit access to schools, resources, and well-equipped learning environments.

    7. Environmental Concerns: Weak infrastructure can lead to improper waste disposal and environmental degradation, impacting both human health and the ecosystem.

    8. Social Inequality: Poor infrastructure disproportionately affects vulnerable populations, exacerbating social inequalities and hindering progress towards achieving sustainable development goals.

    9. Dependency on Aid: With limited capacity to rebuild and maintain infrastructure, Haiti may become more dependent on foreign aid and assistance, impacting its sovereignty and self-sufficiency.

Addressing Haiti's infrastructure challenges requires long-term investments, local and international cooperation, and sustainable development initiatives. By improving infrastructure, the country can create a foundation for economic growth, enhanced public services, and overall better living conditions for its people.

  • Haitians face significant challenges with access to critical medicine, wellness training and accessible health care. Diseases and other health issues can quickly become deadly if not treated. This is both preventable and treatable with proper care. Lab tests and prompt treatment help identify and address issues before they become more severe.

Access to hospital care is costly. Haitians are required to provide even basic supplies and nursing when they go to a hospital. In times of unrest or natural disasters many clinics are not even accessible. Having free healthcare for an entire family is a huge boost. The need for dental care is significant as well and not readily available.

One source of health issues is the lack of safe and clean water sources. People often rely on contaminated water from rivers, streams, or shallow wells, which can be contaminated with pollutants, bacteria, viruses, and parasites. As a result, waterborne diseases such as cholera, dysentery, typhoid fever, and hepatitis are prevalent.
